The new transponder from one of the world’s largest providers of in-vehicle tolling tags is designed for efficiency, sustainability, and the evolving demands of modern tolling systems.

Q-Free, a global leader in mobility solutions for smart city infrastructure, unveiled its new OBU1010 in-vehicle transponder at Intertraffic Amsterdam, marking its first public showcase and a significant step forward in the evolution of DSRC transponder technology. The new on-board unit (OBU) is designed to meet the growing demands of modern tolling systems where performance, sustainability, and interoperability are more critical than ever.

Fredrik SiljeAs one of the world’s largest providers of tolling tags, Q-Free continues to build on its proven track record in delivering high-performance OBUs at scale. With more than 50 million tags delivered worldwide, the company brings decades of experience to the development of next-generation tolling solutions.

The OBU1010 reflects a new benchmark for DSRC performance by combining ultra-low power consumption, enhanced RF resilience, and a compact, highly integrated design with a significantly reduced product carbon footprint. Purpose-built RF filtering ensures reliable operations in increasingly dense radio environments, enabling stable, high-performance communication alongside evolving wireless technologies.

Its compact, discreet form factor blends seamlessly into the vehicle interior while enabling efficient, cost-effective distribution. An integrated transport mode prevents unintended communication prior to installation, minimizing battery drain during storage and ensuring devices are ready for deployment.

Built for versatility, the OBU1010 supports a wide range of applications including electronic tolling, congestion charging, access control, and parking. Designed for seamless deployment across regions, it supports all 5.8 GHz CEN DSRC protocols and enables secure personalization and lifecycle management.

The OBU1010 was introduced to customers and partners at Intertraffic Amsterdam, where it generated strong interest from toll operators, partners, and industry stakeholders.

Fredrik Nordh, Executive Vice President of Tolling at Q-Free, said:

The OBU1010 represents the next step in how we support our partners and customers globally. We've combined decades of experience with modern engineering to deliver a solution that is smaller, more sustainable, and built for long-term performance in increasingly complex environments. This is not just an evolution of our technology — it's a reflection of where tolling is headed.

Q-Free is currently working with partners on product certification, with initial deployments expected later this year.
