General Motors (GM) has announced that its customers have collectively driven 1 billion miles using the Super Cruise driver assistance system.

This figure reflects usage across vehicles in North America equipped with the hands-free driving feature. Around 750,000 vehicles across 23 models have contributed to the total.

Super Cruise is an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) developed by General Motors that allows hands-free driving on compatible highways under specific conditions. Driver attention and readiness to take control when prompted remain required.

The system operates across a range of vehicles, including models from Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC.

Rashed Haq, vice-president of vehicle autonomy at GM, said:

This 1 billion miles driven hands-free by our customers is just the start. Super Cruise is the cornerstone of GM’s autonomous roadmap, from today’s hands-free features to eyes-off, starting with the Escalade IQ in 2028. That, combined with more than a century of manufacturing expertise, puts GM at the forefront to bring automated driving to millions of retail customers at all price points.

GM’s system is intended to serve as a foundation for future developments in automated driving, including eyes-off functionality planned for later in the decade.

According to GM data from the past 12 months, drivers used Super Cruise for around 7.1 million hours across 28.7 million trips. GM said drivers typically spend about 24 minutes per trip using Super Cruise when it is active.

Subscription uptake remains a significant part of the system’s deployment model. Super Cruise subscriptions are projected to exceed 850,000 by the end of the year, with post-trial retention rates reported in the 30–40% range.

The number of vehicles equipped with Super Cruise has increased by around 70% over the past year.

Super Cruise is available across a growing range of GM vehicles, including the Chevrolet Equinox EV and the Chevrolet Silverado.

Wider availability of Super Cruise is intended to support larger-scale data collection from real-world driving conditions, which includes variations in traffic, geography, weather, and road infrastructure. This data is used to refine system performance and support future development of automated driving capabilities.
