Norwegian operator Boreal AS is set to deploy the world’s largest fleet of ‘flying’ electric ferries along its coastline following an order of 20 Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil vessels from Sweden’s Candela Technology.
The order will see commuting speeds along Norway’s coast increased with the aid of a set of new fast, silent hydrofoiling vessels.

With cruising speeds of 25 knots, the introduction of the Candela vessels aims to provide a solution to the country’s ongoing attempts to electrify its waterways, with attempts thus far proving unsuccessful due to vessels with a lack of range and speed.
The Candela P-12 offers a range of around 40 nautical miles, allowing for electric operation on routes previously only served by diesel vessels once they begin to enter service in 2027.
Nikolai Knudsmoen Utheim, CEO at Boreal, said:Candela P-12 is the only electric passenger vessel that combines longer range with high speed without requiring extensive charging infrastructure. Our investment will enable new high-speed routes both in cities and in rural areas.
Norway has already led the electrification of maritime transport. With this fleet, Boreal wants to take the next step—accelerating zero-emission high-speed travel along the Norwegian coast and helping bring electric vessels to new markets beyond Norway.
Recently demonstrated during a voyage between Sweden and Norway; the P-12 is capable of fully recharging in an hour utilising standard DC car fast chargers.
Following the delivery of the first two vessels in 2027, the remaining Candela P-12 units are scheduled to follow in yearly batches between 2028 and 2030.
