Beam Launches Major Safety Education Program in Hobart and Launceston
Global micromobility company Beam has launched a safety-first education campaign in Hobart and Launceston, following over 90,000 trips completed in the first month of operations.
The campaign is designed to educate Tasmanians of the state legislation governing e-rideables.
Beam’s education program includes:
- A digital ‘Ride Kind’ media campaign featuring instructions on how to park and ride safely in Hobart and Launceston
- Five minutes of free ride time for completing the in-app Beam Safety Quiz, featuring education of Tasmania’s state legislation
- 10 Beam Safety Ambassadors in each city to patrol high-traffic areas in both cities daily, promoting safe riding and parking
- The introduction of Half Beam mode for new riders, featuring reduced acceleration for novice riders’ early trips
- A ‘three strikes policy’ – already in force across Beam’s other Australian markets – involving the re-education of offending riders, with a rider’s access to the Beam app suspended on the third strike. The policy covers offences such as helmet compliance, riding dangerously, and bad parking, with several offences such as the destruction of private and/or public property, drink and underage riding resulting in an immediate and permanent ban.

Micromobility is the first new significant form of road transport since the widespread introduction of the car on Australian roads, and as with the introduction of any new mode of transport, we are adapting based on community feedback, how Tasmanians are using the e-scooters, and working collaboratively with government bodies to ensure safety.

We believe that, as cities have found with road safety for cars, the safe introduction and expansion of micromobility on Tasmanian roads is a combination of several things, including education, quality of vehicles, infrastructure and enforcement.
