Archer Aviation has announced plans to work with Starlink to equip its Midnight air taxis with satellite-based internet connectivity. The agreement marks Starlink’s expansion into the emerging air mobility sector.

Under the arrangement, Archer will integrate Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite internet system into its Midnight aircraft and conduct a series of tests. The system is intended to provide high-speed, low-latency internet connectivity during flight operations.

Midnight is Archer’s piloted electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, designed to carry up to four passengers. The aircraft is engineered to operate with lower noise levels and reduced emissions compared to conventional helicopters. It includes multiple redundant systems, including 12 engines and propellers, as part of its safety design framework.

In addition to offering onboard internet access for passengers, Archer plans to use Starlink’s network to support communications between the aircraft, pilots, and ground-based engineering teams. The companies also intend to collaborate on connectivity systems that could support the development of future autonomous aircraft.

Traditional in-flight connectivity systems often rely on ground-based towers or geostationary satellites. In contrast, Starlink operates a constellation of LEO satellites designed to provide broadband coverage, including at lower flight altitudes and in urban areas where terrestrial cellular networks may be inconsistent. Archer’s Midnight aircraft are expected to operate at altitudes of approximately 1,500 feet in and around cities.

Adam Goldstein, founder and CEO of Archer, said:

Connectivity is a must-have feature for Midnight. Starlink is uniquely built to deliver it. This industry-first collaboration will enable seamless, high-speed connectivity and essential amenities for our passengers and pilots.

Archer aims to offer short-distance urban flights lasting between five and 15 minutes, providing an alternative to ground transportation in congested metropolitan areas. Starlink connectivity is planned to be available throughout these flights.

Starlink is developed and operated by SpaceX, a space technology company that provides launch services and satellite operations.
