Waymo has announced that a new round of testing for its autonomous vehicle system will take place imminently in Tokyo, Japan.

Brought to the country in partnership with Nihon Kotsu and GO, the company plans to utilise the trip to further improve navigation systems onboard its vehicles by introducing its driver to left-hand traffic and local driving customs as a whole, as well as better understand how it could serve the residents of Tokyo.

Waymo’s excursion to Tokyo gives the company the chance to work alongside local partners, government officials, and community groups to understand the new landscape

Waymo will introduce a set of all-electric Jaguar I-PACEs into the city in early 2025, with Nihon Kotsu set to carry out both management and servicing of the company’s fleet during the excursion.

Initially, Nihon Kotsu drivers will operate vehicles in certain sectors of the city, including Minato, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Chiyoda and Shinagawa, in doing so generating crucial maps of each area for any future development.
