Waymo has announced that its autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One, will begin operations in Washington, D.C., in 2026.

The company is currently engaging with local communities, policymakers, and emergency responders to prepare for the introduction of its fully autonomous vehicles in the city.

Following its return to Washington, D.C., earlier this year, Waymo has been working to establish regulatory frameworks that will allow for driverless operations in the city. The service is expected to be available through the Waymo One app, joining its existing networks in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin. Future expansions also include Atlanta and Miami before the launch in Washington, D.C.

Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo said:

Waymo One is making fully autonomous driving a reality for millions of people across the US. We’re excited to bring the comfort, consistency, and safety of Waymo One to Washingtonians, those who work and play in the city every day, and the millions of people from around the world who travel to the District every year.

Waymo reports that it currently facilitates over 200,000 fully autonomous paid trips each week. The company states that its autonomous vehicles have collectively driven over 50 million miles and continue to contribute to road safety improvements through collision and insurance data analysis.
