As part of Waymo’s ongoing partnership with Uber, it has launched an autonomous Uber Eats delivery service in Phoenix, Arizona.

Through this initiative, consumers can now be matched with the Waymo Driver to deliver their Uber Eats orders within Waymo’s 225+ square mile Metro Phoenix operations area.

This area is currently the world’s largest autonomous vehicle service area. If an order is made within its limits, Uber Eats customers will receive an in-app prompt notifying them that an autonomous vehicle may deliver their food. They will then have the opportunity to opt out during checkout, if delivery by a human courier is preferred.

After placing an order, customers will be notified if they’ve matched with a fully autonomous Waymo vehicle. When it arrives, they will receive instructions to take their phone with them to open the vehicle’s trunk and collect their delivery.

Initially, Waymo will work with select merchants in Chandler, Tempe and Mesa, including Princess Pita, Filiberto’s and Bosa Donuts.

Since launching its autonomous ride-hailing service in Metro Phoenix,  Waymo has powered tens of thousands of trips on Uber through the Waymo Driver.

The companies are now further expanding their partnership to extend the benefits of safe, convenient, all-electric autonomous driving technology in the city.
