Washington State Ferries (WSF) has awarded a new contract for the fitting of propulsion systems for a set of five new hybrid ferries to ABB.
The contract, which names ABB as the single propulsion source vendor for the operation, will see the company supply comprehensive hybrid electric propulsion systems for the ferries, each of which is set to include ABB’s Onboard DC Grid power distribution technology, energy storage, advanced energy management and integrated marine automation.
Drew Orvieto, Vice president of sales for Marine Systems, US at ABB Marine & Ports, said:We are honored to be selected by Washington State Ferries as its propulsion single source vendor for the new hybrid electric 160-auto ferries.
This partnership highlights our shared vision for sustainability and our dedication to pioneering advanced technologies that drive the industry forward. We look forward to supporting WSF in its mission to provide cleaner, more efficient ferry services for the communities they serve.
The five ferries are the first in a series of sixteen new vessels ordered by WSF as part of the operator’s 3.98 billion USD Ferry System Electrification plan, which aims to modernise its fleet and reduce its overall carbon footprint.
ABB will also oversee extensive design and engineering support for the project as a whole, working with WSF to ensure smooth integration of its technology into the new vehicles.
WSF hopes to achieve its goal of a zero-emission ferry fleet by 2050, which follows broader guidelines put in place by the state of Washington.
Matt von Ruden, WSF system electrification program administrator, said:Big picture, this contract with ABB is about rebuilding our fleet and restoring reliable service to our customers.
ABB’s specialized knowledge and expertise helps reduce risk and ensure performance in the design, construction and delivery of our first five new hybrid-electric ferries.
