Cubic Transportation Systems’ Umo Mobility platform is commencing an innovative pilot in Temuco, Chile – the first Umo implementation outside North America.

The pilot program will enable passengers to choose from various types of fare payment for their journeys on urban and regional buses in addition to taxi colectivos. This will also be the first enablement of taxi colectivos, a shared taxi that travels on a fixed route, in the Umo ecosystem. Payment options for passengers include contactless smartcards, the Umo Mobility app, and tickets with pre-paid QR codes.

The initiative will take place in Temuco, the capital of the region in Araucanía central Chile, and is the product of careful planning by the Regional Government of Araucanía (Gobierno Regional De La Araucanía), the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunication (Ministerio de Transporte y Telecomunicaciones) along with implementation partners CityPlanning and CityMovil.

Oscar Cadet, Regional Public Transportation Coordinator, Araucanía Region said:

We see the pilot as the first step in moving toward the future of mobility, and the ability to grow and integrate with Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) was a key factor in selecting this solution for Araucanía.

The designated name of the smartcard and pilot, Araucanía Te Mueve (ATM), which means Araucanía Moves You, encapsulates our vision. We want to connect people with the places they live, work, and play to improve not only commutes but lives.

The ATM and Umo relationship is designed to offer customer benefits that encourage the use of public transport. These include discounts, promotions and various fare rules and communication channels that help increase usage and provide transport operators with the information they need to improve services across the region.

Bonnie Crawford, VP and GM, Umo Mobility, Cubic Transportation Systems said:

This is an exciting development for Cubic as Umo expands into South America. This solution offers an innovative new public transport payment platform that will leverage the latest Fare-Payment-as-a-Service (FPaaS) technology to improve access to paid transport around the region.

Based on our successful Umo implementations across North America, we worked closely with the team in Temuco to understand the community’s public transit challenges and apply best practices on how they can leverage a simplified fare payment system to serve their riders’ needs.

The ATM and Umo pilot program in Temuco will be a staged rollout commencing in June 2023.
