The Government has announced an additional 18 million GBP in funding to increase the Plug-In Truck Grant, enabling discounts of up to 120,000 GBP on new electric trucks.

Extended to March 2026; the grant forms part of a 318 million GBP plan for green freight, which aims to back British businesses by reducing the upfront costs associated with new lorries and lower emissions whilst cutting costs.

Additional funding will enable companies to purchase new electric trucks and incentivise a switch to zero emission operations in the UK

New grant levels introduced mean that those interested in purchasing smaller trucks (4.25t to 12t), mid-sized trucks (12t to 18t), larger trucks (18t to 26t) and the largest lorries (26t and over) could save up to 20,000 GBP, 60,000 GBP, 80,000 GBP and 120,000 GBP, respectively.

Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation, Keir Mather, said:

We’re backing British businesses to go green by making electric lorries more affordable, helping hauliers to make the switch whilst turbocharging growth, investment and jobs in the sector.

Our proposals will provide the certainty the industry has been calling for so that Britain becomes the best place for green investment.

The increased funding is expected to increase zero emission truck sales and support the delivery of the UK’s wider climate obligations, arriving alongside the Government’s recent pledge to provide 120 million GBP as part of the zero emission heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and infrastructure demonstrator (ZEHID) programme to roll out more zero emission lorries on UK roads.

Thus far, the funding has enabled a number of companies including Amazon and Marks & Spencer in rolling out additional electric delivery trucks on UK roads, with ZEHID rolling out nearly 300 zero emission HGVs by March 2026.
