TIER has developed an in-app accuracy test to deter riders from riding an e-scooter after consuming alcohol.

The in-app test has been developed following research conducted by the insights consultancy Innovationbubble to ensure the task addresses the behavioural changes that occur when drinking alcohol.

TIER Drink-Riding Test
The test asks riders to match the angle of their phone with an angle displayed on their screen
Kate Barnes, Head of Safety and Inclusion at TIER said:

The safety of our riders and other road users is always our number one priority at TIER. By working with behavioural experts, our new in-app test provides yet another way to help riders stay safe.

To test a rider’s sobriety, the test asks the user to match the angle of their phone with an angle on the screen. The rider will be asked to complete this task three times within a set time period. If a rider passes all three screens, they will be able to hire a TIER e-scooter.

If they fail the task, riders will be encouraged to use an alternative mode of transport. TIER plans to support riders who fail by providing direct links to local taxi companies or public transport options.

The test is now available for IoS riders in some of TIER’s operating cities.
