Stellantis has unveiled STLA AutoDrive 1.0, its first in-house-developed automated driving system.

STLA AutoDrive delivers Hands-Free and Eyes-Off (SAE Level 3) functionality at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph).

The system is a key component of Stellantis’ broader technology strategy to improve vehicle intelligence and automation.

STLA AutoDrive is designed to assist drivers in urban environments and stop-and-go traffic, reducing workload and allowing users to focus on other tasks such as reading, watching videos, or checking emails.

The system ensures safe operation by continuously monitoring its surroundings using an advanced suite of sensors, maintaining speed, steering, and braking autonomously when activated.

Ned Curic, Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer said:

Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority. By handling routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.

STLA AutoDrive notifies drivers when conditions permit automated operation. Once engaged via a dedicated button, the system autonomously manages vehicle movement while maintaining safe distances and adjusting to traffic conditions. The technology is designed to function reliably even in low-visibility situations, such as nighttime driving or light rain, with an automated sensor-cleaning system ensuring continuous performance.

At higher speeds, STLA AutoDrive also offers Adaptive Cruise Control and lane centering functionalities in Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) modes.

Built on a flexible architecture, STLA AutoDrive is adaptable for deployment across multiple global markets and Stellantis-branded vehicles. The system is cloud-connected, allowing for ongoing enhancements through over-the-air updates and real-time data integration. Compliance with regional regulations ensures drivers remain engaged when required, maintaining safety and adherence to legal requirements.

STLA AutoDrive is designed to evolve further, with future updates expected to enable:

  • Hands-Free and Eyes-Off operation at speeds up to 95 km/h (59 mph)
  • Off-road automation capabilities for select vehicle models
