Siemens has unveiled a new electric vehicle (EV) charging concept, VersiCharge XL, to efficiently electrify new or existing carparks.

VersiCharge XL was developed in partnership with Nexii Building Solutions. The concept elevates power distribution technologies in a weather-resistant structure that can charge large numbers of electric vehicles in outdoor environments.

US Congresswoman Carolyn Bourdeaux said:

As more and more consumers choose to go electric, we must ensure that our communities have the infrastructure to accommodate electric vehicles. When I ran for Congress, I made a commitment to FutureFit our suburbs, and Siemens EV charging technology helps to deliver cost-effective electric charging in our community. With 2030 only 8 years away, it is critical we get to work building a network capable of supporting our climate goals and millions of new electric vehicles.

Siemens VersiCharge XL
The VersiCharge XL prototype was installed in just three days at Siemens’ North American R&D hub.

The solution is the industry’s first EV charging system to house all electrical infrastructure components in an above-ground, enclosed, low-carbon structure. The design results in minimal disruption to existing carparks and eliminates costly and time-consuming construction work.

John DeBoer, Head of Siemens eMobility, North America, said:

With the ever-increasing demand for EV infrastructure across the United States and beyond, we recognise a real need for fast deployment, scalability, easy upkeep and reliability. This group is continuing to develop and deploy the infrastructure that will enable our country to embrace EVs at scale. Technologies like this system are proof that a nationwide EV network isn’t out of reach, and Siemens is helping make it a reality.

The VersiCharge XL prototype was created using Nexii’s building material, Nexiite, which has comparable properties to concrete with less embodied carbon. Nexii’s vertical structure supports Siemens Sentron™ Busway systems that power the EV chargers.

Stephen Sidwell, Co-founder and CEO of Nexii, said:

Construction and transportation are two of the biggest sources of carbon emissions driving climate change today. Bringing together Siemens and Nexii demonstrates the power of rapid ideation and development of solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems. We’re excited to unveil this initial EV Charger prototype and look forward to even more innovations we can make working together.
