Employees at Schiphol-East are now able to make use of 150 new, free shared bicycles.
Working with Hely, Schiphol has launched a new bikeshare programme, with 150 bicycles situated at five bicycle parking sites. The airport is hoping to encourage all employees of companies located at Schiphol-East to use these bicycles to cover short distances at the airport.
For employees to be able to use the bicycles, companies can set up a business account and employees can then sign up using the Hely app.
A previous bikeshare pilot demonstrated that employees liked using the bicycles on the Schiphol grounds, between the terminal, offices and car parks. The introduction of these shared bikes is the next step towards a permanent bicycle sharing service at the airport.
Richard Emmerink, Director Strategy & Airport Planning at Schiphol, said:The new shared bicycles are perfect for getting to a meeting in another building quickly, getting a sandwich during lunch or continuing your journey from the bus stop. We hope that many employees will make frequent use of the bikes as an alternative to travelling by car. That will contribute to our goal of making transport to, from and at the airport more sustainable.
The bicycles pick-up and drop-off points are:
- Schiphol Knooppunt Noord
- Canadaweg bus stop
- Knooppunkt Oost bus stop
- Southern Crossstraat bus stop
- Zuideinde bus stop
More broadly, Schiphol is encouraging bicycle use among employees by promoting commuting, working on creating good facilities and bicycle routes to and from the airport, including a fast cycle route and bike parking with a service point, and by compensating staff for each kilometre cycled.
