As part of the French government’s 4th Investment Programme for the Future, NAVYA and VALEO are collaborating to develop and design an autonomous vehicle failsafe system (AVFS).

NAVYA, a specialist in autonomous and electric vehicles, announced the partnership with global automotive supplier, VALEO to further the future of level 4 autonomous vehicles.

As level 4 autonomous vehicles do not require human input, their increased production raises many safety concerns. NAVYA and VALEO therefore hope to develop a unique AVFS safety system that will offer an advanced solution and enable fully autonomous vehicles to be commercialised safely.

The 4th Programme d’Investissements d’Avenir, supported by the French government, aims to assist companies at every stage of their innovative developments
Sophie Desormière, NAVYA CEO, said:

This unique project, defined as strategic to guarantee the operational safety of autonomous transport solutions, addresses the design of a failsafe electronic system essential for Level 4 autonomous vehicles commercialisation.

The project aims to ensure the design, realisation and evaluation of a smart system that will guarantee operational safety. The AVFS will build upon NAVYA’s autonomous NavyaDrive® system and will make use of VALEO’s latest sensors.

The unique system aims to achieve complete autonomy for level 4 transport solutions

The autonomous driving system will ensure a second control chain and will be responsible for the safety of passengers and road users. Indeed, if the autonomous driving system goes out of its operational range due to an incident, the AVFS will be able to adapt the vehicle without human intervention.

Oliver Le Cornec, NAVYA CTO, said:

This cooperation marks a key step in the commercial scale-up of our autonomous mobility services without a safety driver. It allows us to offer a product based on two complementary systems, based on perception, localisation and intelligence algorithms, which can provide the expected service and address all potential failures and drifts.
