May Mobility has celebrated the successful deployment of its autonomous vehicle technology across nine different Japanese cities.

The company’s Japanese presence was first established following Toyota AI Venture’s initial investment in the company in 2018 and, with further investments and the addition of a customised Toyota Sienna, it has continued to partner with additional companies such as NTT and SoftBank Corp.

Thus far, May Mobility has deployed in nine cities across Japan, with its first deployment in Higashi-Hiroshima in 2021 paving the way for further establishment in Tokyo, Nagoya and Sakai City, amongst others.

In 2024, May Mobility and MONET deployed near Tokyo Bay, offering members of the public free rides in an opportunity to test May Mobility’s Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) system on heavily populated streets of Japan.

Most recently, May Mobility worked with NTT West in order to launch an AV pilot in Saito City in February 2026. The 30-day demonstration project aims to connect the centre of Saito City with the Saitobaru Burial Mounds, a popular tourist destination.

With the last five years seeing increased demand for autonomous vehicles, May Mobility has stated that it aims to collaborate closely with NTT in order to continue its efforts alongside MONET in order to introduce autonomous driving technology to more municipalities and businesses across Japan.
