Micromobility operator, Lime has launched its Gen4 Seated e-scooter, which aims to appeal to a wider range of riders.

This new model features a padded seat with dedicated storage space underneath, enabling riders to carry belongings such as groceries.

This capability responds to Lime’s previous research that found storage space to be a key factor in whether riders chose to use micromobility. Indeed, storage space can encourage people to use micromobility for longer distances and more frequently.

Joe Kraus, President at Lime said:

We’re excited to roll out the Gen4 Seated scooter globally to welcome more riders onto the Lime platform. The new design allows for added comfort and, when paired with our new storage compartment, will provide for more use cases, encouraging more people to consider Lime to fit their needs. The Gen4 Seated aims to empower our riders to navigate their day-to-day with ease, welcoming a wider audience to micromobility via a more approachable and comfortable ride.

The Gen4 Seated e-scooter is also designed to prioritise safety. Compared to previous models, it has an enhanced suspension and larger wheels for a smoother ride, as well as a lowered baseboard to optimise the vehicle’s centre of gravity and make it easier to get on and off.

During initial pilots of this vehicle in Nashville and Chicago, Lime found that the model appealed to older riders, women and those with limited mobility more than its traditional e-bikes and e-scooters. For example, the Gen4 Seated attracted 33% more first-time female riders than Lime’s Gen4 e-scooters.

Josh Meltzer, Head of Government Affairs at Lime said:

Through our initial launches, we’ve seen how the Gen4 Seated introduces new riders who may have previously been sceptical about e-scooters or e-bikes. It reinforces the idea that while the need for affordable and sustainable transportation is universal, sometimes riders just want options that accommodate different needs and preferences. Transitioning more people from cars onto shared electric vehicles ultimately helps cities become healthier, safer, and more livable, and we’re glad the Gen4 Seated will contribute to that goal.

Alike to the Gen4 e-bike and e-scooter, the seated model also features swappable batteries and a modular design for replacing necessary parts.

It is currently available in Chicago and Milwaukee and will be launched in a dozen additional cities across North America in the coming months.
