Lilium has announced that production is now underway on the electric propulsion system for its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) jet.

This work is being completed at its dedicated propulsion facility located next to its headquarters in Wessling, Germany.

The start of production is considered a key milestone on Lilium’s path towards industrialisation and commercial entry into service, with the first manned flight of the Lilium Jet planned for late 2024.

Yves Yemsi, COO of Lilium, said:

The start of propulsion assembly represents a significant step towards industrialising the Lilium Jet. In the coming weeks we will be systematically working towards validating our manufacturing capabilities and preparing to deliver the propulsion units for initial aircraft integration and type-certification.

In the first phase of assembly, the propulsion system’s rotating parts will be assembled, including the shaft, magnets and titanium compressor fan. They will also be joined with the associated static components such as the e-motor stator and guide vanes.

These parts will then be integrated into the engine, prior to installation into the Lilium Jet’s propulsion mounting system later this year.

The start of assembly follows extensive testing of the required propulsion subsystems. The custom-designed aircraft e-motor has been developed in collaboration with Denso and Honeywell, while the titanium compressor fan was built with Aeronamic, and the electric motor bearings were built in cooperation with SKF.

It is anticipated that this work will enable Lillium to launch the first electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle featuring a jet engine. This engine will be integrated into the wing flaps to provide benefits in payload, aerodynamic efficiency and a lower noise profile.
