The largest ‘e-sharing hub’ in Europe has opened at Hamburg Airport, providing 120 charging points for electric car shares.

This will allow passengers travelling to and from Hamburg Airport to conveniently use and park shared electric vehicles from SIXT share, MILES and SHARE NOW, who have committed to electrifying at least 80% of their fleets by 2025.

Car Sharing Charging
Car sharing users now have 120 parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of the Hamburg Airport’s terminals

These dedicated spaces aims to help promote travel by shared electric car to Hamburg Airport, which became the first major CO2-neutral airport in Germany last year.

Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition said:

“In addition to the mobility transition, the drive transition is the decisive lever for achieving the climate goals in the transport sector. With the largest e-sharing hub in Germany, we are also making good progress here and are supporting the electrification of transport.

“We have agreed with the car-sharing providers that at least 80 percent of the vehicles will be electrically powered by 2025. The expansion of the charging infrastructure is an important prerequisite for this.”

With this latest commissioning at Hamburg Airport, more than 200 charging points for car shares are now available at 16 locations across Hamburg.

By the end of 2023, up to 20 additional points will also be equipped with charging infrastructure and integrated into Hamburg’s mobility app, hvv switch.

This builds upon Hamburger Hochbahn’s work to expand the number of car parking spaces in the city that are exclusively available for car sharing vehicles.

Henrik Falk, CEO of HOCHBAHN said:

“The more available and convenient the use of shared mobility becomes, the less I need my own car. With our constantly growing network of sharing providers and the continuous expansion of the infrastructure, we cover all mobility needs step by step - even with a lot of suitcases in our luggage.”

The charging infrastructure at Hamburg Airport includes 100AC charging points with a capacity of up to 22kWh and 20 high-power DC charging points with a capacity of 75kW.

An intelligent load system has also been integrated into the hub to ensure effective use of this infrastructure.
