Karsan’s Autonomous e-ATAK electric bus has begun passenger operations with Vy Buss in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The 8.3-metre bus will run on a 4-kilometre route between Gothenburg Central Station and Liseberg Station, serving seven stops in the city’s Gårda district.

The vehicle is operated by Vy Buss under contract with Västtrafik, the regional public transport authority. The project will run for one year and is intended to test autonomous technology under regular urban traffic conditions.

The Karsan Autonomous e-ATAK is equipped with Level 4 automation technology developed in partnership with software company ADASTEC. Its sensor package combines LiDAR, radar, cameras and GNSS to support navigation and situational awareness.

Powered by a 220 kWh battery, the bus can be recharged in around five hours using AC charging or three hours using DC charging. It has capacity for urban transit operations and is designed to operate in varied weather conditions.

Karsan CEO Okan Baş said:

This application is not only a demonstration of Karsan's engineering capabilities, but also a significant contribution to Sweden's future mobility ecosystem. Overcoming challenging operational conditions, including Scandinavia's harsh climate and dynamic city traffic, the Autonomous e-ATAK will offer passengers a unique experience centered on comfort, safety, and reliability.

The service marks the first use of a series-produced Level 4 autonomous bus in Sweden. It follows earlier deliveries of electric and autonomous vehicles by the manufacturer to operators in markets such as Japan and the United States.

Karsan has supplied more than 2,000 electric vehicles across 27 countries. The Autonomous e-ATAK is its first vehicle to be deployed in passenger service in Sweden.

Dr. Ali Peker, CEO of ADASTEC said:

The Level-4 public transportation service we offer in different cities and countries around the world in collaboration with Karsan proves the maturity and reliability of our technology. The Autonomous e-ATAK, which has been put into service in Gothenburg, is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and the complexity of urban traffic, offering a safe and seamless journey with ADASTEC's Level-4 autonomous driving technology.

At each new stop, we are not only transporting people, but also sustainable cities and inclusive public transportation into the future. Our goal is to transform autonomous public transportation services into a meaningful service that meets today's needs and will be passed on to tomorrow's societies.
