Micromobility operator Helbiz is releasing its AI-powered HelmetChecker tool to help operators meet compliance requirements and open up a new revenue stream for Helbiz.

HelmetChecker uses AI and computer vision to verify whether a rider is wearing a helmet and has the strap correctly secured. Micromobility operators can use this feature to stop a vehicle from unlocking if the user is not wearing a helmet, or to provide incentives to riders who use them in areas where helmets are not mandatory.

The helmet verification technology has already been piloted within the Helbiz app following its launch in December 2021.

Salvatore Palella, CEO of Helbiz said:

“The HelmetChecker has been a game changer for Helbiz and the value we can bring to cities. With 99.7% accuracy, this technology can help other micro-mobility vendors remain compliant and improve rider safety, while bringing a new revenue stream for Helbiz.”

Micromobility operators will not require a software development kit or assistance from AI engineers to implement the technology. Instead, an image is simply passed through the HelmetChecker API and a JSON response is read.

The product will be available on a monthly subscription fee and a per-API-call fee per image plan.
