Guatemala City Modernizes Traffic Management with Technology from Kapsch TrafficCom

  • Centralized traffic light system for more efficient management
  • New control center to operate 511 intersections

Guatemala City will be the next capital city in Latin America to feature the urban mobility management solutions of Kapsch TrafficCom, joining cities such as Buenos Aires, Quito, Lima and Panama City.

The City has recently contracted Kapsch TrafficCom to implement a centralized traffic signal system through a traffic control center that will allow the operation of the 511 intersections with traffic lights, and renew the traffic signal infrastructure of the current intersections.

To this end, Kapsch TrafficCom will provide all the infrastructure for the renovation of the City’s Control Center, including the hardware and software necessary for the implementation of its mobility management technology platform, EcoTrafiX™. The platform will enable fixed, actuated, responsive and adaptive time regulation modes.

The EcoTrafiX™ controllers will control the 511 intersections, which will be renewed with new traffic lights, video detection cameras and variable messaging panels. An open and standardized communication protocol will be used to enable and facilitate interconnection between equipment from different vendors.

According to Santiago Rosas, Kapsch TrafficCom's Solution Consulting Manager for Latin America:

The traffic light centralization is one of the first steps towards intelligent mobility management and will impact on better mobility for citizens in Guatemala City.

The contract between Kapsch TrafficCom and the City also contains the development of a technology transfer process through the training of personnel responsible for the operation and management of the System.
