Lilium N.V. has announced production on a set of new, advanced, aviation grade battery packs intended to power its Lilium Jet eVTOL unit on its first piloted flight towarrd the end of 2024.
The battery packs, which are being produced at Lilium’s purpose-built battery factory in Munich, are comprised of lithium-ion cells with silicon-dominant anodes, allowing for higher power, energy and fast-charging possibilities than typical graphite anode cells.
Yves Yemsi, COO of Lilium said:The start of production of the battery packs is a proud moment for Lilium. Battery technology is central to the goal of delivering sustainable regional air mobility, including overcoming the challenges of developing and industrializing a battery pack that will meet the stringent safety standards of aircraft certification.
With the start of production of the Lilium Jet’s unique high-performance aircraft battery packs, Lilium has laid a further cornerstone towards realizing the vision of electric aviation.
The battery packs have been tailor made to meet the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)’s aircraft safety targets, and have been designed to meet the demands of regional air mobility, with each Lilium Jet set to be equipped with 10 independent battery packs per unit.
