The Biden-Harris Administration, through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), has announced 291 million in grants aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector.
This funding is part of the broader Investing in America Agenda and supports the goal of achieving net-zero aviation emissions by 2050.
The funding, provided under the Fueling Aviation’s Sustainable Transition (FAST) programme, will support various projects, including:
- 244.5 million USD for 22 projects focused on the production, transportation, blending, and storage of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). These projects aim to expand SAF production and improve supply chains, making SAF more accessible.
- 46.5 million for 14 projects developing low-emission aviation technologies, which will enhance fuel efficiency and increase SAF usage.
Key projects funded include 16.8 million USD to Gevo, Inc. for converting a Minnesota fuel facility to SAF production, 240,000 USD for a study on SAF deployment at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and 8 million USD to JetZero, Inc. for developing fuel-efficient aeroplane technologies.
These grants will be distributed across 23 states, involving a diverse group of recipients including fuel producers, logistics companies, aircraft manufacturers, and universities.
This initiative is a significant step toward decarbonising the aviation industry in line with the US Aviation Climate Action Plan.
