Daimler Truck and Volvo Group have announced a partnership to develop a new, standardised software and hardware platform in the software-defined vehicle context.

The platform is planned to form a common basis for independent digital vehicle functionality, introducing standardised solutions for the automotive sector as a whole.

Martin Daum, CEO Daimler Truck, said:

Digitalization in the vehicle is just as important as the transformation towards CO 2 -neutral drive technologies. Developing a software-defined vehicle platform together with Volvo Group will enable us to make our trucks and buses programmable.

This enables us to develop differentiating digital vehicle features for our global customers much more quickly and efficiently. Together with the Volvo Group we can develop a leading truck operating system and define an industry standard.

With the new venture, which will see its headquarters based in Gothenburg, Sweden; the two groups intend to enter into an equal partnership, forming a new, independent company to develop both the software and hardware.

The partnership is expected to see a final agreement before 2025.

Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of the Volvo Group, added:

Volvo Group and Daimler Truck are two great companies. Now we are joining forces to more quickly offer our customers the benefits that a software-defined vehicle platform for trucks will bring. Given the rapid transformation of our industry, it makes sense to work together to accelerate development, increase volumes and share costs. Software-defined heavy-duty trucks represent a paradigm shift in the transformation of our industry.

By transforming the truck into a programmable vehicle with standardized hardware and operating system for rapid product updates, both companies have the opportunity to add value to our customers and also through standalone digital services and vehicle functions to create their customers. Partnership is truly 'New Leadership.'
