DAF Trucks has begun series production of its fully electric DAF XD and XF Electric trucks. Designed for efficiency, safety and comfort, the new models offer zero-emission ranges of over 500 kilometres on a single battery charge.

The trucks are powered by PACCAR EX-D1 and EX-D2 permanent magnet drive units, delivering outputs from 170 kW (230 hp) to 350 kW (480 hp). A compact three-speed transmission with planetary gears ensures efficient, smooth shifting and allows partial use of the motors under light load, optimising energy use and maximising payload.

The vehicles contain modular battery packs, with two to five units providing capacities from 210 kWh to 525 kWh. The batteries use cobalt- and nickel-free LFP cells and can be recharged fully without reducing service life. A smart battery-management system distributes energy efficiently across the driveline and other components.

The XD and XF Electric trucks are available as 4×2 tractor units and rigids, or 6×2 rigids with steered pusher or trailing axles, with GCWs up to 50 tonnes.

DAF first introduced a fully electric distribution truck in 2018 and has since deployed CF and LF Electric models across Europe for urban deliveries and waste collection. The new XD and XF Electric extend electric transport capabilities to heavier and longer-distance operations, building on the existing XD and XF series chassis.
