Belgian fleet operator VLOOT DAB has contracted Baltic Workboats to build an electric 30-metre catamaran passenger ferry for operations on the River Scheldt.

The catamaran vessel will provide emission-free transport for pedestrians and cyclists, with a capacity for 150 passengers and 150 bicycles.

The ferry will feature a fully electric drivetrain supported by a Corvus Energy energy storage system, with Danfoss supplying the hybrid system and electric motors. It is designed to reach a top speed of 18 km/h, with a cruising speed of 14 km/h and an electric range of up to three hours at that pace. Solar panels will also be installed to cover auxiliary power needs and improve operational efficiency.

The catamaran’s internal layout has been designed to allow smooth and rapid boarding and disembarkation at frequent stops. The vessel will be equipped with Baltic Workboats’ Integrated Automation, Monitoring and Control System (IAMCS), which allows a crew of three to manage and monitor all vessel systems from the wheelhouse.

The new ferry will be a sister ship to three similar vessels previously delivered to VLOOT DAB. Delivery is planned for September 2027.
