The Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) and Tri Delta Transit have partnered with construction contractor, Flatiron and East County Connection Partners (ECCP), comprised of Glydways and Plenary Americas, to introduce autonomous, on-demand transport in Eastern Contra Costa County, California.

This initiative will advance the East Contra Costa County Dynamic Personal Micro Transit (DPMT) Project, which aims to operate zero-emission, autonomous Glydcars on narrow, dedicated guideways.

The electric vehicles deployed in this project will each accommodate four passengers, with their design prioritising space efficiency, lower operational costs, and emission reduction.

In addition, the Glydcars will offer ample space for luggage or bikes and will be fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, ensuring wheelchair accessibility.

It is thus anticipated that the fare-based transit solution will enhance accessibility in East County, connecting with existing services like BART and local buses. In turn, this could ease congestion on State Route 4 (SR-4).

CCTA Board Chair Federal Glover said:

We’re very excited about this project and believe it will significantly improve the quality of life in our community. It’s a bold step towards a more sustainable and accessible future for Contra Costa.
