The Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) has contracted Artemis Technologies to supply a fully electric Artemis EF-12 Pilot boat.

This initiative aligns with Sweden’s efforts to transition to a fossil-free maritime sector, supporting the goals of the Fossil-Free Sweden Initiative and the country’s climate policies.

Powered by Artemis Technologies’ eFoiler® system, the EF-12 will be the first pilot boat of its kind in Nordic waters. It will provide pilotage services for vessels navigating Sweden’s busy shipping lanes, contributing to safer and more sustainable maritime transport.

The vessel’s hydrofoil technology lifts the hull above the water, reducing drag and energy consumption while operating with zero emissions. This design also lessens wake impact, helping to protect marine ecosystems and minimise shoreline disturbances.

Dr Iain Percy OBE, CEO of Artemis Technologies, said:

Our eFoiler® technology represents the future of maritime transport and we are excited to deliver a vessel that aligns with Sweden’s bold vision for a fossil-free maritime industry. The Artemis EF-12 Pilot boat will not only be emission-free in operation but will also deliver the high performance, reliability and efficiency needed for such a critical function.

This project forms part of Sweden’s broader strategy to decarbonise its maritime industry, with the aim of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045.
