Argo AI is set to begin operations at its new autonomous vehicle test track in Greenville County, South Carolina in October 2022.
The new test track is located at the International Transportation Innovation Center (ITIC) on the campus of the South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center (SCTAC).
The Greenville facility will differ from Argo’s other three test tracks in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Munich, as it will have the infrastructure to test at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.
Argo has already deployed its autonomous driving technology for ride-hailing and delivery services in urban environments and now aims to expand its potential service area to include the use of highways. This would allow its autonomous vehicles to connect with high-demand locations such as airports and warehouses outside of cities.
The new track will allow Argo AI to develop and test safe autonomous driving capabilities at highway speeds.
Dr. Peter Rander, Co-Founder and President, Argo AI said:As a longstanding centre of technological innovation, Greenville County and the State of South Carolina is a great place for expansion of Argo’s testing operations. In addition to the safety benefits of autonomous vehicles, we see a huge potential for autonomy to create new business and workforce development opportunities, helping foster innovation and economic growth at both the local and state levels.
As part an initial 2.6 million USD investment in the facility, Argo plans to create at least 40 jobs. The company will provide training and upskilling opportunities.
